Local government officials in the Houston area are being flooded by emails from BP employees as a part of astrange and unprecedentedcampaign to get them to drop a lawsuit filed against companies involved in the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the Houston Chronicle reports.

The report says Harris County, Texas, which includes the city of Houston, earlier this month filed suit against BP, Transocean, Halliburton Energy Services and related businesses for $23 million in tax revenues it claims it lost as a result of the oil spill.

In the weeks since, city and county officials have been showered with thousands of emails, mostly boilerplate messages highlighting BP’s impact on the local economy from company email addresses, including those of local executives, the report says.

The newspaper reports local officials question whether the emails are coming from actual employees.

BP told the newspaper the company emailed some 10,000 employees in the Houston area urging them to write a local elected officials and linking them to a pre-written message they could personalize.
